Current Status (approximately 4:17 PM EDT on October 29, 2025): Hurricane Melissa is a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h (100 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 974 mb. It is located at 22.1°N 75.3°W (about 320 km southeast of the central Bahamas).

It is moving northeast at 24 km/h (15 mph), after rapidly accelerating after crossing eastern Cuba this morning. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 65 km (40 miles) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 225 km (140 miles).
Melissa formed in the southwestern Caribbean, rapidly intensifying into a Category 5 hurricane, a historic record—one of the strongest in Atlantic history—with maximum sustained winds of 298 km/h (185 mph) and a minimum pressure of 892

Hurricane Melissa is a historic monster: the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in Jamaica, with the fifth lowest pressure in the Atlantic basin, fueled by exceptionally warm Caribbean waters (climate change amplified its intensity and slowed its movement).
Its peak Category 5 phase caused an unprecedented double impact on Jamaica; it is now weakening, but remains deadly as it heads rapidly toward the Bahamas and Bermuda before dissipating in the Atlantic.
Forecast: The Bahamas faces heavy impacts tonight; there is no risk of landfall in the United States. Focus on recovery: Aid is arriving in abundance, but the challenges are enormous: restoring power will take weeks, and rebuilding is more expensive due to inequality. Lessons: Resilient infrastructure and climate change adaptation are urgently needed. Prayers for the resilience of the Caribbean. 🌪️ Stay tuned for updates from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
