A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan

On December 8, 2025, at approximately 11:15 p.m. local time (JST), a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan, about 80 km (50 miles) east of Aomori Prefecture, in the North Pacific Ocean, at a depth of about 50 km (30 miles).

The epicenter was located near Misawa, in Aomori, and the affected areas experienced shaking exceeding 6 on the Japan Earthquake Intensity Scale, strong enough to prevent people from standing and cause heavy furniture to fall.

This event prompted immediate tsunami warnings from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate, with fears of waves up to 3 meters (10 feet). According to the latest updates (approximately 2-3 hours after the earthquake), the situation remains unstable, with aftershocks ongoing and warnings in effect.

The immediate effects of the earthquake were widespread but appeared to be relatively contained thanks to Japan’s robust seismic infrastructure. The main impacts include:

The earthquake was felt by approximately 13 million people in northern and eastern Japan. Evacuation orders were issued for about 90,000 residents of coastal areas, many of whom moved to higher ground or designated shelters. No large-scale mass evacuations have yet been reported.

Initial waves of 20 to 70 cm (up to 40 cm in Urakawa, Hokkaido, and Mutsu Ogawara, Aomori) reached the coast shortly after the earthquake. Higher waves (up to 3 meters) were anticipated, but have not yet materialized in confirmed reports.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) raised the alert to a full alert at 11:23 p.m., urging people near the coast or rivers to evacuate immediately. Infrastructure disruptions:

Power outages affected approximately 900 households in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, a figure later revised downward from initial estimates of thousands.

Railway services in the affected area were suspended. No problems were reported at nearby nuclear power plants operated by Tohoku Electric Power and Hokkaido Electric Power.

Initial images showed broken glass on roads in Hachinohe and Aomori, as well as the possibility of tile falls, shattered glass, and overturned furniture. No widespread structural collapses have been confirmed.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) assesses the risk of a high number of deaths as low (green level), with a 65% probability of between 0 and 1 death and a 96% probability of less than 10 in total.

Although the full extent is still being assessed, the consequences so far point to minor but noticeable disruptions, with the potential for intensification due to aftershocks or larger tsunamis:

Injuries and casualties: Several injuries were reported at a hotel in Hachinohe, Aomori, likely from falling objects or panic during the tremor; no fatalities have been confirmed.

Public broadcaster NHK indicated that this was not a life-threatening event. More comprehensive assessments of the casualty count are underway, but the initially low number of casualties reflects the effectiveness of early warning systems.

Economic and long-term effects: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates a “yellow” (significant) economic impact, with a 35% probability of damages between $1 million and $10 million and a 98% probability of damages below $1 billion. This could include infrastructure repairs, lost productivity due to evacuations, and temporary halts to fishing and shipping at affected ports. The earthquake briefly weakened the yen against major currencies before a partial recovery. Secondary risks:

Multiple smaller earthquakes (magnitude 5 or higher) have occurred within hours, and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is warning of potentially stronger earthquakes in the coming days.

A megathrust earthquake alert has been issued for Hokkaido-Sanriku, affecting 118 municipalities and advising residents to stockpile food and water and prepare for evacuation during the next week. This is due to increased seismic activity in the Japan Trench.

Coastal communities are facing ongoing stress from evacuation, with risks of fires (common after an earthquake) and disruption of essential services. Images from social media feeds and security cameras show intense shaking in offices and homes, increasing public anxiety.

Comparisons with past events (e.g., the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, which killed approximately 18,000 people) highlight how Japan’s preparedness (advance warnings, earthquake-resistant buildings) mitigated the worst consequences in this country

This magnitude 7.6 event underscores Japan’s perennial vulnerability on the Ring of Fire, but also the effectiveness of its disaster response systems, which limited immediate damage to injuries and localized disruptions.

No major catastrophes have yet occurred thanks to rapid tsunami warnings and evacuations, but the Japan Meteorological Agency’s (JMA) warnings of further earthquakes and the megathrust earthquake alert indicate a period of heightened risk ahead, potentially lasting up to a week.

Authorities, including Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, have mobilized an emergency task force focused on damage assessment, search and rescue, and relief efforts, prioritizing human life.

Globally, it serves as a reminder of seismic unpredictability; residents are urged to heed warnings, stock up on essential supplies for three days, and avoid coastal areas until the situation is clear
