I leaned out the window too far… and crashed!
Borussia Dortmund not only dropped two points in their 1-1 draw in Hamburg, but also suffered a very unpleasant response on social media from HSV.
What’s this all about?
HSV sanctions BVB for social media taunts.
Context: Approximately an hour before kickoff, Borussia posted a photo of the players’ tunnel at the Volksparkstadion on their “X” account (formerly Twitter) and wrote: “Does the clock still exist? And if so, what time does it show?” Next to it was a thoughtful smiley face.
A clear dig from Dortmund, referencing the old clock at HSV’s stadium. For years, this clock displayed how long the former Bundesliga giant had played uninterruptedly in the top flight since the Bundesliga’s founding in 1963.
Following their first relegation in 2018, the clock was taken down at 54 years, 261 days, 00 hours, 36 minutes, and 02 seconds (and subsequently collected by the German Football Museum in Dortmund…). HSV then had to wait seven proud years in the second division before returning to the top flight.
BVB’s provocation would have had an even greater impact had Niko Kovac’s team (54) won the match on matchday 10. But after Carney Chukwuemeka’s opening goal (64th minute), HSV responded in the 7th minute of stoppage time.
Thanks to Ransford Königsdörffer’s header (24), the Volkspark erupted in jubilation, and HSV’s social media department saw a golden opportunity for revenge.
Shortly after the final whistle, HSV’s official account responded to the taunt from three hours earlier, replying with: “Our clock read 90+7 when the ball hit the ground.” Accompanying the reply was a know-it-all emoji with glasses.
Thus, BVB’s pre-match post backfired spectacularly. In the first two hours after the final whistle, HSV’s response garnered over 1,000 likes, and the number continued to climb throughout the night.
The match ended in a draw on the pitch, but the scoreboard showed a clear home victory for Hamburg.
