A huge outburst despite a great performance!
Union Berlin fought hard to secure a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich, putting in a truly solid performance. But coach Steffen Baumgart (53) was furious after the final whistle.
In an interview with Sky, the coach discusses the thrilling match against the league leaders and has some choice words for a scene that occurred right at the start of the game.
9th minute: Union Berlin striker Ilyas Ansah reaches the ball after a corner and beats Manuel Neuer. The Alte Försterei stadium erupts in jubilation, until VAR intervenes. The under-21 international was seemingly offside by the slimmest of margins when Rothe headed the ball over the bar, and referee Exner disallowed the goal after a lengthy delay.
The BVB star was a target for Bayern Munich in the summer.
The manager, visibly angry in an interview, said: “The first goal is a goal. To call an offside by 5 millimeters—and we’re talking about 5 millimeters—is madness!”
It was an extremely close call that ultimately hurt Union and has sparked considerable anger from Baumgart.
