Hungary’s László Krasznahorkai receives this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature
Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai wins
this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature.
This was announced by the Swedish Academy on Thursday.
László Krasznahorkai is 71 years old.
He comes from the
Hungarian town of Gyula.
László Krasznahorkai
is known for writing difficult books
with very long sentences.
One sentence can be 18 pages long.
His books are often depressing,
but they can also be funny.
The first book
he wrote was Satantango.
It was published in 1985.
It remains his most famous.
In it, we follow
people in a Hungarian village.
It rains constantly.
The village houses are rotting.
Everyone smells bad.
People are having fun and dancing.
Several of László Krasznahorkai’s books have been adapted into films.
He has frequently collaborated
with
Hungarian director Béla Tarr.
The film “Satantango” lasts
more than seven hours.
The Nobel Prize is worth
eleven million kroner.
It will be presented by the King
on December 10 in Stockholm.
Swedish Radio spoke with
a happy László Krasznahorkai
after learning of the award.
“I’m calm and very nervous,” he told the radio.
