In an interview, Wang Shih-hsien stated that he only learned from a friend that Yan Zhengguo had been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma last year, after his death, “because we hadn’t seen each other for over a year and we were all busy.” He lamented that the news was “so sudden and unexpected, that sometimes I can’t believe it.” Gu Bin mentioned that he and Yan Zhengguo exchanged greetings during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Yan Zhengguo usually responded promptly to messages, but hadn’t responded in recent days.
Yan Zhengguo’s last voicemail before his death was also revealed. More than two weeks before his death, he responded to his appreciative friends: “Thank you, thank you.
